Chesapeake Bay Adventures

The Swanendele property of 2.7 acres and adjoining 1-acre of state-owned “wetlands,” features nearly 800 feet of wraparound waterfront. The property has been landscaped to preserve and restore the natural character of the land and vegetation, with traditional Maryland trees and colorful gardens added, providing year-round greenery and seasonal flowers. Swanendele Inn is in Ridge, MD on historic Southern Maryland’s Western Shore, some 70 miles from Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD and Richmond, VA, and 12 miles South of PAX and 7 miles north of Point Lookout at the confluence of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. As St. Mary’s prepares for its’ 400th anniversary in 2034, the Innkeepers hope and trust that Swanendele Inn will remain and grow as the flagship of St. Mary’s hospitality.

Meet the Hosts

The building site was purchased and developed by Gerald Meyerman and his wife Victoria O’Hara. The Innkeepers were captured by the rich history and unmatched natural beauty of St. Mary’s County. They bought the property featuring nearly 800 feet of wrap around waterfront in 2001 and slowly, meticulously planned and built the Inn between professional assignments overseas, culminating in the opening of the Swanendele Inn in June, 2019. The house features modern systems and conveniences, including geothermal heating and cooling, ultraviolet filters in all air handling units while presenting the warmth of a large, loved and lived in family home of yesteryear.

Both have lived and worked all over the world in professional capacities, and the artwork and furnishings of Swanendele are a testament to the length and breadth of their travels. The couple met the third partner and Innkeeper, Miguel Gavilanez while visiting the leading Inn in Ecuador some twenty years ago and convinced him to legally move to the USA. A US citizen with an associate degree in Hospitality, he was instrumental in building the Inn and developing the widely praised menus and food served at the Inn.

They live up to their motto, "come as a guest, leave as a friend"

“Gerry and Vicki, are very accommodating and welcoming. We arrived late 9 PM, they stayed up and made a very nice dinner for us. The property is beautiful. The clams are delicious. The Wassily Kandinsky prints in the upper hall are a nice treat as is the rest of the art. This would rate as one of my best stays ever. Rooms are spotless!”

“Beautiful Inn. We came for 2 nights for our Anniversary. We stayed in the Margaret Brent Suite. The room was amazing, fire place, jacuzzi tub and our own private patio. The Inn is right on the water, the property is awesome. Breakfast in the morning made by Miguel, great chef and so friendly. The Inn Keepers Gerald and Victoria are so friendly and welcoming. You can tell they put a lot of love and thought into this place. We would stay here again.”
