This room was named for historic Point Lookout at the confluence of the mighty Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay at Point Lookout,7 miles south of Swanendele – a short drive, an easy bike ride, or a healthy hike through rural Southern Maryland. Point Lookout is now a state park with a large campsite, beaches, good shore fishing, and many other water activities. With the remains of Fort Lincoln and the Virginia shore across the Potomac, Point Lookout played a role in the War of Independence, the War of 1812, and the especially the Civil War. During the Civil War, Point Lookout was used as the largest detention camp for confederate soldiers and sympathizers with an estimated 50,000 passing through its gates. Three monuments with divergent messages commemorate the approximately 3,400 men and women who died while imprisoned on-site.
